Unit 1 – Intro to Technique and Note Reading

  • by

In this unit, you’ll learn the basics of playing piano from scratch! No experience needed!

I recommend watching 4 lessons per week. Practice that material until the next week, or as soon as you feel comfortable, accurate and fluent. Pay close attention to your hand shape and posture as you play – developing good skills and habits is extremely important!

8 Easy Beginner Songs

4 Finger Gyms – to develop coordination and good playing technique

Introduction to Sight Reading

Theory :

  • How notes are written on the page
  • How to read and locate notes in treble and bass clef
  • Basic Rhythm
  • Musical signs and symbols including treble clef, bass clef, grand staff, bar lines, measures, repeat signs, time signature

This depends on you!

Practice is an important component of musical learning. Playing piano is a skill. You can’t read about playing piano or watch videos about playing piano and become a piano player!

To learn piano you must practice each skill until you have achieved mastery – which means understanding what you are playing, being comfortable playing it accurately, and keeping your beat steady (playing without pauses.)

The 16 lessons of Unit 1 can be worked in 4 sets of 4 lessons.

Every lesson starts with a video.

You can work on 4 consecutive lessons at the same time – they each build on the last one. In this way, you’ll master and review the material adding on and overlapping four lessons at a time as you go. Ex. work on lessons 1 to 4, then work on lessons 2 to 5, then lessons 3 to 6, etc until you complete the unit.

Each group of 4 lessons contains new theory/information, new skills, new music to play, and a finger gym.

If you create a free user account on this website, your progress will be tracked as you progress through each unit. You can watch the video lessons without an account, but you’ll have to keep track of your own progress.

For best results you’ll want to practice with the printable materials. You can buy unit 1 alone, or get the most value from the Beginner Bundle: Year 1 Complete eBook set.

Unit 1 is the first of 6 units in Year 1 Comprehensive Beginner Piano Lessons

Year 1 units are progressive

— You’ll make forward progress with each lesson you learn! It’s a good idea to do some review as you learn as well.

I would suggest doing no more than 4 piano lessons at a time. Work on that material, practicing until you have ease before moving on to the next lessons
